I am Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Department of Electronics and Information, Politecnico di Milano, and responsible of the I3 (Innovative Interactive Interfaces) division of HOC Lab. I hold a Master Degree in Mathematics from the University of Padova (Italy) and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Politecnico di Milano.

In the last 10 years, my research interest and activities have focused on innovative interfaces and interaction paradigms, including tangibles, full-body interaction, and robotic interaction, for persons with special needs (in particular, children with developmental disabilities and the elderly). On these topics, I am currently collaborating with special education institutions and therapeutic/ rehabilitation centers in Italy, EU, and US.

My previous research concerned topics related to hypermedia modeling  and design, usability engineering, multichannel web applications, addressing the domains of e-learning, e-culture and e-health.

I am (co-)author of over 140 publications in international conference proceedings, journals, and books (h-index 30 and > 4.000 citations according to Google Scholar).
I have organized over 50 international tutorials and workshops, and has been member of the Program Committee of over 40 international conferences, serving as Program Chair in 4 of them (3 organized in cooperation with ACM).

Since 1988, I have coordinated the tasks of Politecnico di Milano in 18 EC funded projects. I have acted as Project Coordinator of 3 EC funded projects and 2 national projects. I received the IBM Faculty Award in 2013, the POLISOCIAL Award in 2013, and in 2016 I have been  Finalist in the European Competition “EIT Innovators Awards”.  One of the EC projects I coordinated has been acknowledged as “Success Story Project” by the Directorate-General for Education and Culture of the European Commission for the M4ALL project. I served as European chair of ACM SIG-WEB (ACM Special Interest Group on Hypermedia & Web) from 1997 to 1999 and Member of the Board of Directors of the EPOCH European (Network on Excellence in Processing Open Cultural Heritage). I am currently Rector’s Representative of Politecnico di Milano in the Italian Management Committee of EIT Digital (European Institute of Technology). Since 2013, I have served as Member of the Evaluation Panel of ERC (European Research Council) Starting and Consolidator Grants.
